about the construction management competition (cmc)
The Construction Management Competition is ABC’s hallmark event promoting careers in construction management. Supported by ABC members, the CMC features teams of college and university students testing their project management, estimating, safety, quality control and presentation skills. Student chapters compete at the National Convention.
THE ASK
We need industry experts who can dedicate their time to mentoring our students, providing education and guidance without directly preparing the documents. The commitment involves a 4-week period during the fall semester for introductory workshops and a 6-week period during the spring semester, including a minimum of six 2-hour workshops.
ROLES NEEDED
Project Management Partner
– Role: Project Manager or Superintendent
– Focus: Site Logistics Plan, Project Schedule/Construction Sequence, Organization Chart, Project Approach
– Commitment: Fall lecture session and bi-weekly meetings during both periods to field questions and review progress
Estimating Partner
– Role: Estimator or Preconstruction Manager
– Focus: General Conditions, Quantity Takeoff Methods, CSI and Uniformat Summary of Cost, Clarifications and Assumptions
– Commitment: Fall lecture sessions and bi-weekly meetings during both periods to ensure understanding of estimates and assumptions
Safety Partner
– Role: Safety Manager or Project Superintendent
– Focus: Safety Plan, Top Safety Risks, Job Hazard Analysis, Lifting and Crane Plan
– Commitment: Fall lecture session and bi-weekly meetings during Step I preparation
Quality Control Partner
– Role: Project Manager, Superintendent, Quality Control Manager
– Focus: Quality Control Plan, Approach to Quality, Risk Factors Affecting Quality
– Commitment: Fall lecture session and bi-weekly meetings during Step I preparation
Mechanical Partner
– Role: Mechanical Contractor
– Focus: Estimating/takeoff of mechanical, plumbing systems, Assumptions and clarifications
– Commitment: Two meetings during RFP preparation to review progress
Electrical Partner
– Role: Electrical Contractor
– Focus: Estimating/takeoff of electrical systems, Assumptions and clarifications
– Commitment: Two meetings during RFP preparation to review progress
Site/Civil Partner
– Role: Site Contractor or Civil Engineering firm
– Focus: Estimating/takeoff of site utilities and grading, Assumptions and clarifications
– Commitment: Two meetings during RFP preparation to review progress
